surviving on one income:

tips for stay-at-home moms

Transitioning to a single-income household can be a stressful time for many families, especially for stay-at-home moms accustomed to the dual-income lifestyle. With careful planning and smart financial strategies, it is possible to not only survive but to thrive on one income while still enjoying a fulfilling family life. Here are some practical tips to help stay-at-home moms navigate the challenges of living on a single income:

create a budget

The first step to successfully managing a single income is to create a realistic budget that accounts for all your expenses and income. Start by tracking your spending for a few months to get an accurate picture of where your money is going. Write down everything you spend money on including things like gas, coffee at the drive thru, dry cleaning and groceries.  I like to create a list on paper of expenses going out and money coming in for each month, but there are many free apps you can use as well.   Next, identify areas where you can cut back or reduce expenses to align with your new income level. You may find that you are spending too much on food each month or maybe all those fast-food stops are beginning to add up. Whatever it is, using a budget can help you save a few dollars.

See my Buzzy Bee Budget page for more details on creating your own budget.

prioritize your spending

When living on a single income, it’s important to prioritize your spending and focus on the things that matter most to your family’s well-being. Separate your needs from your wants and prioritize spending on essentials such as housing, food, utilities, and healthcare. Cut back on non-essential expenses like dining out, entertainment, and luxury items to free up more money for necessities.

embrace frugal living

Frugal living doesn’t mean sacrificing quality of life; it’s about making smart choices and finding ways to stretch your dollars further.

Look for ways to save money on everyday expenses such as:

Meal Planning – Plan your meals for the week and make a list of items you need for those meals.  Making one trip to the grocery store instead of multiple will cut down on the food expenses.

Buy Generic Brands – Buying generic brands is a great option for saving money on groceries.  If you’re like me, you know that not all generic brands are the best but give them a try.  You’ll be surprised to find quite a few that taste the same as name brands.

Shop Sales and Use Coupons – When shopping for clothes and household items, try not to buy something unless it’s on sale.  Stores like to play price games so if you can wait another week to make your purchase, you may find it on sale.  If you have a favorite store that you shop in regularly, sign up for emails.  You’ll receive up to date sale information as well as coupons to help you save a little extra.

Find Free or Low-Cost Entertainment Options – Look for free or low-cost activities for your family to do in your community.  Check to see what events are happening in your area that your family may enjoy.  Most are family friendly and free or low cost.

Get Creative with DIY Projects – Let your creativity flow!  Take a look at old clothing, furniture and household items you are looking to give away and think of ways to reuse them for other needs.

Look For Free Resources in Your Community – Most communities have parks, playgrounds and libraries that are free to use.  Take advantage of what your local community has to offer.

build your emergency fund

Having an emergency fund is vital for financial stability, especially when living on a single income. Aim to save at least three to six months’ worth of living expenses to cover unexpected bills or income disruptions.

Take a look at your budget and figure out how much you can afford to save each month.  Start small and gradually build up your emergency fund by setting aside a portion of your income in an easily accessible account.

check out other forms of income

While being a stay-at-home mom is a full-time job in itself, there may be opportunities to earn extra income from home to supplement your family’s finances. Consider freelance work, part-time remote jobs, or starting a home-based business that aligns with your skills and interests. Even a small additional income can make a significant difference in your financial situation.

See my page on Making Money At Home for more tips and ideas on how to make money from home.

shop smart

When living on a single income, every dollar counts. Take the time to negotiate lower bills and shop around for better deals on essential services like insurance, utilities, and phone plans. Look for ways to save money on big-ticket items by buying secondhand or waiting for sales. Practice mindful spending and avoid impulse purchases to make the most of your limited resources.

open communication is key

Effective communication with your partner is key to successfully managing finances on a single income. Be open and honest about your financial goals, concerns, and priorities, and work together to make decisions that are in the best interest of your family. Set a regular time to review your finances and adjust your budget as needed to stay on track.

focus on what matters most

Ultimately, living on one income is about prioritizing your family’s well-being and happiness above all else. Remember your reasons for deciding to become a stay-at-home mom instead of returning to work and why they were important to you. Focus on building strong relationships, creating lasting memories, and fostering a loving and supportive home environment for your children. Financial security is important, but it’s not the only measure of success. By embracing a simpler, more intentional lifestyle, you can thrive on one income while enjoying a fulfilling family life.

While living on one income as a stay-at-home mom may present its challenges, it’s entirely possible to survive with the right mindset and financial strategies in place. By focusing on these tips, you can achieve financial stability and create a happy and fulfilling life for you and your family. Remember, you’re stronger and more resourceful than you think. With determination and perseverance, you can overcome any obstacle that comes your way. Here’s to thriving on one income and building a bright future for your family!
